Every year, the senior class chooses a gift that it would like to leave behind for fellow classmates. Senior students campaign all year to raise money for the gift and then after graduation, the money is handed over so the gift can be made or purchased.

Emily Stein, senior class president, and Dawn Schipper, alumni's annual giving coordinator, worked together to create a new plan for this year's 2010 graduating seniors. They decided that they wanted to change the focus of the senior class' legacy to be more about philanthropy and the students giving back to their soon to be alma mater. The idea is to raise money to help improve a specific area of campus instead of buying an object.

An email was sent out yesterday to all seniors asking them to participate in a survey to help decide where the money will go. The list of options is printed in the box to the right. Voting will end on Friday, February 5, 2010 so it is important for seniors to fight senioritis and get their voting done early. While some of the executive positions have already been filled for the Senior Legacy Committee, there are still positions available for the general committee. Stein said, "We can use the help of all the seniors to work for or with the committee. If anyone is interested in holding an executive position, there is still room for a fundraising chairperson as well as a special events coordinator." After the committee spaces have been filled and voting is finished, the fundraising for the selected area will begin.

The goal has been set for the fundraising efforts to begin on Monday, February 8, 2010. Last year, the senior class raised approximately $4,500, which was raised by 40 percent of the senior class. Stein also said that, "The goal is not going to be focused so much on a dollar amount, but on a participation level. I really want to have at least 50 percent of the senior class donate." She feels that if at least half of the class donates, then it will easily make enough money to make a difference for Drury.
