Drury professor to discuss sex and the Bible
Issue date: 11/18/09 Section: News
Drury University associate professor of religion Dr. Teresa Hornsby will present convocation on sex and the Bible this Thursday at 11 a.m. in Clara Thompson Hall.
Hornsby believes this is a topic especially important for college students and will use her Biblical interpretation "to educate folks on what the Bible says and doesn't say about sexuality so that the Bible isn't used as a weapon."
Given the fact the college students and people, in general, talk about sex all the time, Hornsby believes it is appropriate and necessary to talk openly about what texts exist in the Bible about sex. Hornsby also affirms that "the Bible has ample amounts of positive attitudes about sexual pleasure. And, the material that is clearly negative may not be specifically about sex at all."
Audience members should come equipped with the their Bibles and prepare for the unexpected as Dr. Hornsby takes them through various texts such as the sex laws presented in Leviticus, Genesis 19, and Song of Songs, among others, revealing a textual reality perhaps not previously considered.
