The beach is the place to be in Rostock year round. A very popular destination for the summertime, I was surprised by the number of people enjoying the beach in November. Although everyone was bundled up in warm coats, scarves, and mittens, the chilly weather did not stop anyone from walking the beach, playing Fußball, or flying kites. A lot of our time on Saturday was spent strolling along in the sand, watching the sailboats and ships go by while being serenaded by the synchronous waves. A wonderful way to spend a Saturday!
On Sunday, I spent the day with my friend and his parents exploring the city. With a city as old as Rostock, there are a lot of historical sites, buildings and museums to see. Spread throughout the city is the University of Rostock. Founded in 1419, it is the oldest university in Northern Europe and has many historical buildings to view and explore. There are also many churches that match Rostock's age. Visiting the almost 800-year old St. Petrikirche, or St. Peter's Church, I was able to get a panoramic view of all of Rostock from its 125 meter tower. The tower is famous in itself, as it was a landmark used by sailors for hundreds of years to safely guide their ships into port.
Hanseatic Rostock is a charming city, and one that can be visited and enjoyed at any time during the year. It is another place that gives Germany character and diversity. Now when I think of Germany I will not only think of German beer, but also the beach! While it was hard for me to leave the comfort of my friend's home and travel back to Lüneburg and my little apartment, I know there are many more wonderful weekends to come.
A special thank you to the König family for welcoming me into their home and sharing their city with me! Danke schön!
