Career Conundrums
Issue date: 5/6/09 Section: Life
The summer jobs I am looking at ask for an application instead of a resume. Should I send both?
You can submit both documents but do not send a resume alone. Employers want to see that you can follow directions. If you submit the resume as well, you still need to fill out the application completely. Never write "see resume" on any section, although it may be tempting. Carefully read instructions and target your application for the desired position, just as you should with your resume content. Be sure that information like dates and job titles is consistent in the two documents. More detailed information is often needed for applications, including past supervisor names, full addresses, salary history, and dates of employment. You will need the first and last names and contact information for references as well as your Social Security Number and possibly your driver's license number. When asked for your criminal history, be sure to include all information and an explanation as needed. Being dishonest can keep you from being hired or you can be fired at a later date if the employer finds out you didn't divulge your history. Last but not least, be sure to dress appropriately when going to fill out an application or even when picking up and dropping off an application. You never know whether front desk staff may make notes about your appearance (and your attitude!). You may even have the chance to speak to a hiring manager on the spot!
