Getting messy for a cause
Fifth annual LCA Watermelon Fest a success

Lambda Chi Alpha got a little sticky last week to raise money for the Ozark Food Harvest with their annual Watermelon Fest.
Unlike the ordinary food drive of canned good donations, these boys organize an annual Watermelon Fest involving seven watermelon filled activities.
In order to raise money for the Ozark Food Harvest, an organization that provides food to soup kitchens across the Ozark area, Lambda Chi collects money from Watermelon Fest t-shirts sold around campus by the fraternity.
Last year Lambda Chi's profits translated into roughly 8,000 pounds of food for the Ozark Food Harvest. With an initial goal of bringing in over 15,000 pounds this year, Lambda Chi raised roughly 11,000 pounds and still hopes to reach its goal by the end of the year.
Chris Sutton, the event coordinator, said that they learned of this fun filled way to raise money in a convention for their fraternity. Throughout the nation many Lambda Chi chapters hold this event to benefit shelters, and Sutton said that the Drury chapter loved the idea as well.
With events such as an eating contest, relay race, melon toss, seed spitting contest and tug of war, there was a large student turnout in Sunderland field where the excitement and competitive nature were apparent.
Among the students was Drury sophomore Liz Jones. Jones was a part of the Kappa Delta team, which she says puts together a team every year for the event.
"It's a really great way to have a little healthy competition, raise money, and socialize," Jones said. "Plus you get to act as goofy as you want."
Healthy competition, raising money for a good cause, and socializing may be the reason for some to attend Watermelon Fest, but according to Sutton, it's all about the fruit.
"Why not watermelons? It's just fun for everyone, you get to break them and get dirty . . . They are fun and messy and we just have a good time," Sutton said.
Kappa Delta brought home the victory in multiple competitions which helped make the event a little more fun for the sorority.
"It's all pretty fun, but especially tug of war. We won that," Jones said.
