For several years, senior Sarah Jenkins has been helping gather presents for a project called Operation Christmas Child.

The operation's goal: putting together small boxes with presents and small gifts for children around the world.

In 1993, more than 38 million gift-filled shoeboxes have been distributed worldwide. Last year, 24,000 boxes were assembled in southwest Missouri alone.

Two years ago, Jenkins worked on a hall-wide drive in Smith Hall. She did it again last year "Unfortunately, this year, I was too busy and the season really snuck up on me, but my mom and I managed to put together eight boxes on our own."

The project has some gift guidelines, such as no war-related items or glass bottles.
"We try to make sure every box has crayons, and a toothbrush," Jenkins said. "Then beyond that we fill the boxes with whatever items we've collected throughout the year and what we find while shopping. It's really fun to go toy shopping again and know that some kid, somewhere, will get a great surprise for Christmas."

Collection is usually done in the middle of November, so those interested in participating need to look ahead to next year.
