The Springfield area hosts a flurry of activities to celebrate the holiday season

* Festival of Lights Free Ice Skating - Dec. 16, 17, 23, 25, 26. Times vary. Admission is free; skate rental is $2.50. For more information, call Jordan Valley Ice Park at 866-7444.

* "The Nutcracker" - Dec. 16-18. Prices and times vary. For more information, call the Landers Theatre at 869-1334.

* Holiday Ice Show-"The Christmas Angel" - Saturday, Dec. 17 at Jordan Valley Ice Park. Admission is $5. For more information, call 866-7444.

* "Broadway Rocks 4"- Dec. 30, Jan. 5-7, and 12-14 at Vandivort Center Theatre. For more information, call 831-8001.

* First Night Springfield - 5:30 p.m. to midnight on Saturday Dec. 31. Admission is $7 and will get you into an evening of music, theater, storytelling, dancing, magic and comedy. For more information, call 862-2787.

* Horse-Drawn Carriage Rides - Carriages will run on every Friday and Saturday through Christmas. Cost starts at $5.50. For more information, call 742-2809.

* Santa Visits Bass Pro Shops - Get a photo with Santa now through Dec. 24. Santa will be there 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. For more information, call 887-7334.

* Santa Visits Battlefield Mall - See Santa now through Dec. 24. Visit Santa for free 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sundays. For more information, call 883-1234.

* Silver Dollar City's "An Old Time Christmas" - From 1 to 9 p.m. now through Sunday, Dec. 18. For more information, call 1-800-831-4386.

* Branson Area Festival of Lights Driving Tour - The tour is a free "treasure hunt" in which drivers look for the 12 Days of Christmas. For more information, call 1-800-214-3661.

* Festival of Lights at Cornerstone Church - This light display is from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. each day through Dec. 31. Donations are accepted. For more information, call 831-7242.
